6 TIPS TO COPE WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY

BETTER HEALTH BEGINNING TODAY

We all want to have great relationships, have friends, be a great co-worker, voice our opinions and be a part of life. Social anxiety will sabotage these wishes!

Social anxiety makes us fear interactions with people even when we would love to make friends. Fear of being judged, fear that we might say something stupid, fear of embarrassment and more fears. We don't make eye contact, we might sweat profusely, breath fast, blush and the list goes on.

We realize the fears are irrational but we can't really think or will them away. But we can learn coping strategies and skills to challenge and change what we believe and how we think, and behave in social situations. Therapy can help.

Here are some tips to help cope with social anxiety

Make eye contact

Make small talk

Ask questions but don't plaster the  listener with too many questions.

You are not the FBI.

Try some humor

Be patient with yourself.

Make yourself  comfortable. Pay attention to your breath, breathing slowly and deeply, longer on the exhale.

Repeat.

WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

It’s that time of the year. In less than two weeks we will enter a New Year with joy and perhaps some regrets about what we would like to have tried, completed, let go of etc during the year 2017. Many of us will be making resolutions: eat healthier, exercise more, nurturing our great relationships, letting go of unpleasant even toxic relationships, spending less and on and on. I make lists a lot and I get to check off some items and notice that some items are still sitting there. I started to think of the lists that I made in 2017 and how I had a 2017 bucket list. I checked my bucket list just a few days ago. it’s almost full to overflowing. Argggh!!! Here’s a short version the list and it’s full of “more.” What’s that all about anyway? A lot of the items are always works in progress and will be on the 2018 list! 1.     Pray & meditate more                                                                              2.     Improve my mindfulness practice                                                      3.     Nurture great relationships with family and friends.                        4.     Let go of unhealthy relationships                                                      5.     Learn to play piano                                                                              6.     Exercise more                                                                                    7.    Eat more vegetables                                                                          8.     Write my memoir                                                                                  9.     Write the stories my parents told me for my grandchildren.                10.  Join a dance group for fun                                                                  11.  Travel to Greece/Spain                                                                          12.  Start a private practice and help more people                                    13.  Create passive income                                                                       14.  Read fiction books and not just clinical or social work books   Do you make lists?  Do you have a bucket list?
